BralorneThe Bridge River Valley consists of many small communities, including Bralorne, Gold Bridge, Gun Creek, Gun Lake, Tyax Lake, and Marshall Lake. Bridge River Valley's claim to fame would be the old gold mines in the valley, and each of the communities has its own special part in the history of the valley. Bralorne was once the richest gold mine in Canada's history and is one of the world's deepest delvings. Throughout the vicinity of Bralorne, the presence of hidden air shafts and other old openings into the mine make casual hiking extremely dangerous, so if you pay a visit be very careful while walking in the bush. The valley's busiest times were from the 1930s to the early '60s, and at its peak the population of the Bridge River goldfields towns was well over 10,000 - larger than today's Lillooet, and comparable to Squamish of only a few years ago. Some of the historical buildings still standing in the historical Bridge River Valley are the Pioneer Mine, Bralorne Hospital, Boultbee Memorial Church, the Old Catholic Church, Jail House, the Model Bakery, School Gym, Bralorne Pioneers Mines Office building, and the Bralorne Pioneer Mine. Summer adventurers visit the Bridge River Valley for its fishing, hunting, rockhounding and rugged mountain beauty. Lake Downtown, behind Lajoie Dam, is 26 km long. CarpenterLake, behind Terzaghi Dam, stretches 55 km to Gold Bridge. In the summer, fishermen troll the lakes for kokanee, rainbow trout and Dolly Varden char. Snowmobiling on the alpine glaciers draws the winter enthusiasts. |
