Tatla Lake / West BranchTatla Lake is located 220 km west of Williams Lake along Highway 20 (Chilcotin Freedom Highway). The small community is situated half-way between Williams Lake and the coastal community of Bella Coola. The B.C. Ferries Discovery Coast Passage to Bella Coola offers a circle tour through the Chilcotin. Tatla Lake is situated at an elevation of 900 m (3000 ft) on the Chilcotin Plateau, in view of the spectacular Coast Mountains. Tatla Lake is the gateway to the three major mountain valleys of West Branch, Chilko and Tatlayoko. The valleys extend southward via secondary road access. The West Branch Valley is laced with many recreational lakes. Horn Lake, Bluff Lake, Sapeye and Middle Lakes offer superb fishing, camping, paddling, and ice fishing. Other outstanding recreational opportunities include day hikes, cross country and heli-skiing, wilderness back country mountaineering, wildlife viewing, horseback excursions and ranch life experiences. Several cottage, lodge and cabins are available in Tatla Lake and the West Branch Valley area, offering travelers unlimited opportunites, peaceful environments and solitude. The "White Mile" of Chilko River's Lava Canyon challenges rafters and kayakers from around the world. Here the river drops 19 metres per km, 1,500 feet in 15 miles. Chilko Lake is the largest high elevation freshwater lake in Canada. Bluff Lake is a fixed wing and helicopter tour access point for wilderness tours and destinations, including the Homathko Ice Field and Mt. Waddington, British Columbia's highest peak, at 4,016 metres. The Waddington Range is a world class mountaineering destination. |
