When winter settles over the Land of Hidden Waters, BC’s iconic Fishing Highway (Highway 24) takes on a whole new character. This compact route, around 100km (66mi) long, connects Highway 97 to Highway 5 and contains nearly 100 frozen lakes, for one of the province’s most approachable and rewarding cold-season fishing regions that is ideal for every type of angler, even those who have never before dropped a line.
Families will find the Fishing Highway especially welcoming in winter, thanks to experienced local guides who specialize in introducing newcomers to ice fishing in a safe, hands-on way. Guided outings take the guesswork out of the experience, providing all the gear, instruction, and local knowledge needed to get started. Kids and first-timers will have a terrific time learning the basics, from drilling holes to spotting bites below the ice along with tips for safe and comfortable winter fishing. With patient guidance, warm shelters, and plenty of stories shared along the way, ice fishing here becomes less about the catch and more about time spent together outdoors, creating memorable winter moments for all ages.
The appeal goes well beyond what’s beneath the ice. Snow-covered lakes become quiet corridors for skating, snowshoeing, and unhurried winter walks, with long views and wide-open skies setting the tone. Evenings are made for warming up indoors at lakeside lodges, cozy cabins, or winter-ready resort. With fresh mountain air, abundant wildlife, and a strong sense of community, the Land of Hidden Waters delivers a slower, more immersive way to experience this beloved region so you can create new traditions, share with locals, and create lasting memories.
